When it comes to science fiction heroes, everyone has their own favorites. That kid with the Green Lantern t shirt and Slurpee cup? He’ll probably tell you that anyone worthy of the Green Lantern Corps is probably good enough to rate as the best. But what is that really makes a great science fiction hero?

For sci-fi fans, and non fans, characters that undergo significant personal growth are the best the genre has to offer. That’s why these folks tend to gravitate towards epics like Star Wars. If the number of Star Wars t shirts walking the streets is any indication, this is a popular worldview.

And then there’s the other sci-fi fan who just loves big guys, with big hearts who always do the right thing. To this type of person, a Superman t shirt isn’t so much a fashion statement as it is a moral statement.

Lastly, we find the fans who just love a good story. They don’t need epic films and adulation because what they really want is a story they can escape into. Fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune or Game of Thrones fall into this category.

At the end of the day, all of the groups have valid points. But that’s what makes science fiction great, there’s always something for everybody.
