As Memorial Day approaches, many Americans are getting their summer homes ready for the annual onslaught of visitors. But in the hard light of day, it quickly becomes clear that many of these homes are overdue for a decorative makeover.

Fortunately, second homes generally aren’t held to the same decorating standards as primary residences. This makes redecorating them a fairly affordable venture.

One tried and true interior design philosophy for vacation homes is the “hand me down” method. This simple strategy involves recycling older items, like bed quilts, from their main house and re-using them at the summer house.

Of course recycling your own possessions is cheaper, but not as much fun, as buying new items. If you’re looking at new bedding and furniture, don’t shy away from discount stores like Family Dollar and Wal-Mart. After all, queen size quilts are all pretty similar and anyone with a second home knows how hard guests can be on bedding and furniture.

Not very many people are enthusiastic about purchasing used bedding for their summer home, but furniture and decor is another story. Second hand stores are full of great items for summer homes, like nautical wall decor or framed paintings.

Summer homes are casual, fun places and their decor should reflect that feeling.
