Co-workers occupy an odd place in our lives. Often times, we’ll spend more time with co-workers than we do with family members. But all that time spent together does not necessarily have a close, personal relationship with them.

While this lack of a personal relationship may not cause any problems most of the time, it can be a little awkward when it comes to milestone birthdays. It seems impolite not to acknowledge an important event, but what’s an appropriate 40th birthday or 50th anniversary gift for a co-worker?

Gift giving is a lot easier if you know your co-worker has a good sense of humor. A 40th birthday gift basket filled with gag gifts like Metamucil tablets, a cane and reading glasses. Most folks will appreciate this humorous, but not overly personal gift.

If your relationship with your co-worker, or boss, is a little more formal, consider gifts that are certain not to offend, like birthday newspapers. These reprints of the newspaper from that person’s day of birth are interesting and thought provoking, but not in any way offensive.

Co-workers are a big part of our daily lives, so it’s only right to acknowledge their special events with small, thoughtful gifts.
