Candy and many types of after school snacks are the biggest sellers in vending machines in schools or daycare centers across the country. The vending machines usually sell many types of candy, such as chocolate candy, peanut butter candy, caramel candy, peppermint candy, fruit flavored candy, and candy with nut clusters. It is widely held these days that candy, in almost every form (with very little exception) is not the healthiest in terms of options to choose from for after school snacks. Many parents and even teachers are recommending that the vending machines which feature and sell all these different types of candy be modified, and soon. Due to the near addiction kids have to sugar and candy today, it will be a difficult habit to break, but it is very possible to teach ourselves and our kids the fact that substitutes for candy can be found as snacks. Items like fruit, cereal bars, or even different types of nuts are great sources of naturally occurring sugars, protein, fiber, and even healthy fat, all components of the diet that every developing child should have access to. The hope is that in the future, consumption of candy can be drastically reduced, and that snacks will be healthier.
