Do not be proud if you claim to have never enjoyed seafood in restaurants that sell live fish. Because, for the sake of live fish trade (especially reef fish), the fishermen use cyanide poison and bombs, which endanger about 56 percent of the coral reefs. In fact, fish stocks and coral reefs of Indonesia itself has been threatened by the practice of overfishing, coastal development, and sedimentation (World Resources Institute, 2002). Overall damage the reef is near the coast. Well, what happens if the coral reefs are far from the coast and the remote also has been disrupted by the activities of fishing with destructive methods?
As a community of fish enthusiast, you can help stop this destruction by being more selective when I want to enjoy seafood. Then, more often shared on friends and family about the types of seafood are safe for consumption, based on population and fishing supplies are environmentally friendly. You can hold on to Seafood Guide that has been launched by WWF Indonesia (open www.wwf.or.id / seafood guide, or read this article.
WWF Indonesia has also established Seafood Savers, a group of companies consisting of manufacturers, exporters, importers, and retailers are engaged in the exploitation and trade of marine resources. This community will seek certification obtaining MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), the certifying marine fish captured in a friendly environment. During this time, the products of MSC labeled seafood is still the imported product.
“Begin to be consumers who annoying. If you want to buy grouper, grouper select which provoked, not bombed. At least it’s easy to find if there was the MSC label, but if not there, we expect consumers will look in places that Responsible,” says Dewi Satriani, Communications, WWF-Indonesia Marine Program, when talk show Choose Your Seafood @ Right in America, Pacific Place, Jakarta, some time ago.
According to Dewi, there are other ways to tell if fish is sold are the catch is environmentally friendly, namely, by identifying characteristics.
The condition of the fish that was bombed is usually already damaged. Broken bones, flabby flesh, partly damaged skin, red eyes, and broken blood vessels. “Disability is not because of friction, but because of injuries. At a certain radius, in the event of injury, the structure of the inside shows the fraction of blood vessels. Fish is not fresh like after arriving in Jakarta,” said Imam Musthofa Zainuddin, the National Fisheries Program Coordinator, and WWF Indonesia.
There are also types of fish are sedated, to be sold alive. Fish are anesthetized generally still smooth parts of the mouth (even though when Dragnet, mouth of the fish is still intact). Meanwhile, the damaged parts of the mouth means exposed to fishing, and is more secure another with fish who were given potassium. “The fish are very slimy, if its life does not seem healthy. But it is also troublesome because it is usually tricked in a way given the ice in a long time,” continued the priest.
You also can help prevent the decrease in populations of certain fish wisely choose the type and size of fish. If you want to enjoy the crab, avoid that there is a female crab eggs. If you like crab eggs, which mean you, stop the breeding.
When choosing fish (like tuna or grouper), choose the minimum weight of 600 grams. Below 600 grams, it means the fish was a baby. Then select the fish that has a plate size, length of fish from the mouth down to the fins 15 cm (not the whole length of the fish.) Avoid ordering certain fish that fall into the category be avoided or reduced at the supermarket. Do not forget, these products are available because there is demand from consumers.
